Aligning Classroom Assessment with the PARCC Performance-Based Assessment
During the morning session, veteran facilitators from the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute will show teachers and administrations how to utilize high quality instructional practices for yielding student work that mirrors the PARCC Assessment. The session will also address using rubrics and examining student work to determine standard-based grades as well as using the student work to guide and determine the next steps necessary for improvement. Participants will leave with a plan to implement a systematic process for going from standard to grade book.
Innovative Programs Explored
A guided bus tour of innovative programs at three Vicksburg Schools will complete the pre-conference activities. The Scholastic Academy provides 7th and 8th grade students interactive project-based learning geared toward the more academically advanced student. Participants will be able to view innovative student-led sessions with a STEM flair.
A visit to Bomar Magnet will introduce participants to a Franklin Covey “Leader in Me” School. Bomar was recently awarded International Light House Status. Participants will be introduced to the goal setting process used by all students guiding their academic success. Covey’s Seven Habits are the cornerstone for all activities in this “Leader In Me” School.
A visit to Star Academy, a new pilot program funded by the Mississippi Legislature, will end the tour. Housed at Grove Non-Traditional School, overage 8th grade students at Star Academy participate in an intensive technology driven program which allows them to successfully complete 8th and 9th grade coursework during their 8th grade year on an accelerated 4 X 4 block schedule.
